anniversary getaway!

We celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary on July 19th! It's funny looking back, because our 5th anniversary was going to be our big "babymoon" out of country tropical trip.  We thought that was a good monumental anniversary to celebrate and then start thinking babies.

Well God had a different plan, and our 5th anniversary was an overnight trip 1.5 hours from home and the first time I had left Adeline overnight.  We're thankful God has better plans than ours.  Adeline is the most amazing blessing that has happened to us in 5 years!

Anniversary Celebration Run-Down

year 1- couples massage and dinner
year 2- Ruth's Chris Steak House
year 3- stayed overnight in the same beach-front Florida resort room
we stayed for our honeymoon
(pregnant with Adeline)
year 4- baby-free dinner out and then a beach walk
(we were on a family trip to St. Simons, Georgia with my fam)

We threw around a lot of ideas for our 5th and none were with the mention of an overnight.  I hadn't been able to get myself to stay overnight away from Adeline her entire 20 months of living. (Breastfeeding also threw a tad hiccup in that because of her still wanting milk at bedtime and in the morning.  Totally okay with me...but I started to realize the need for us to get away.)

So I decided to make my gift to Justin the gift of time...that I would commit to an overnight trip away. I was so excited planning it, and because of that, knew I was ready to stay away from her overnight.

{disclaimer: many self-taken, fuzzy iPhone pics ahead ;) }

We left after church on Sunday and drove out of town 1.5 hours away to a scheduled couples massage at the same place we had our first anniversary couples massage.  Simply amazing! We aren't ones to splurge on things like that, so it made it extra special!

rejuvenated after our massage!
After that, we went and checked in at our hotel.  We stayed at the same hotel we stayed our wedding night.  What made it even better is that they had renovated all their rooms and their pool area, so it made it extra nice and a bit different.  It's a very classy, horse country, southern hotel.  We had made a note that it was our 5th anniversary and we had stayed their our wedding night when we reserved the room.  When we got to our room, they had booked us the balcony room on the top floor of one wing of their hotel.  We had a HUGE balcony overlooking part of the city.

After relaxing a bit and getting ready, we headed to a new, trendy Mexican restaurant we had heard a lot about.  They had great food and our table was facing the huge jellyfish tank that is centralized in the restaurant.
We spent the evening after dinner walking around a gorgeous park with a beautiful fountain.

The next morning we enjoyed sleeping in (which never EVER happens post-baby ;). We took our time, grabbed coffee and a danish and then explored the town some more, including eating a yummy lunch at a local place.

We decided that afternoon to hit up the oldest working distillery in the US for a tour since it was on our way home.  We had never taken a tour and even though we aren't drinkers, we were super interested in the history of it all.  It was a fun time and we learned a lot about our state's history, which was pretty cool!

That night, we met up with my family and Adeline at dinner to pick her up.  She acted like she could care less when we surprised her. ha! I'm pretty sure we missed her a tad more than she did us! :)

while mommy and daddy are away...the toddler will play!
It was a great time and such a special reminder of why Christ calls us to put our marriage first.  We were able to soak in some wonderful uninterrupted time together to reconnect.  That alone was the best gift we could have given each other!

Here's to at least 80 more amazing anniversaries with my amazing hubs!

our story and engagement!

Tomorrow is our 5th wedding anniversary! I can't believe it's been half a decade already! In honor of this special anniversary, I thought it was time to share our story again.  Because who couldn't use a little sappy love story in their lives?! Oh, and don't worry...you're getting the long version! You're welcome.

We met...

In Kindergarten! It's true.

We grew up a few miles down a country road from each other.  That's true too.

We were "boyfriend and girlfriend" in 4th grade.  (Still not making this up.)  As some people like to joke...I broke up with Justin in 4th grade and he never got the memo.  I like to give him a lot more credit than that!  I still remember being in the backseat when I was little, passing his house, seeing him out on his go-kart running around outside, and it making me a bit giddy. ;) My mom has recorded in my baby book that Justin was the first boy I mentioned and I may have had a slight crush on him in primary. ;) (We were in the same class K-3rd grades.)  I also remember my grandparents seeing him and his family out to eat on Sundays after church and they would tease me that they saw my future in-laws. Ha!

And then middle and high school happened.  We were acquaintances and sometimes around the same people or at the same place, but not often.  He hung with the soccer crew and was such a good person all through school.  A sweet stand-up, christian, boy-next-door.  The guy all the girls should have dated.  The guy all the parents hoped their little girl would date.

We reacquainted toward the end of HS.  We started hanging around the same crowd the summer before my junior year of HS because my family joined the church Justin grew up in (oh yeah, we also had gone to the same church for a bit when we were super young.)  We were in the same youth group, went on the same mission trips, and hung out with the same group of people.   My ex-BF was gone to college my senior year.  Justin started coming around a bit more. ;) I still like to thank Justin for that. (And the Good Lord!) I remember one day my senior year when a few of us stayed after school to work on some homecoming week art for school, Justin rolled up after soccer practice in his convertible mustang and asked us if we wanted a ride. HA! Of course, two 17 year old girls aren't gonna pass up a ride in a convertible. ;) He likes to brag that he gave me my first ride in a convertible. You have to really know my car-crazed husband to know why that is so important to him. ha! My best friend, Justin and myself started to hang out a lot together the summer after we graduated and especially at the beginning of college.  He went away to college about an hour and a half away, she went away 4-5 hours away, and I stayed near home.  We spent any extra time we could together just hanging out with each other and others.

And then there was a break-up...

From my high school BF.  Who was there to pick me up from that dreary time in my life that I now look back on as the best thing that could have ever happened to me?! Who was always there as my best friend?

Justin.

He sent me flowers on Valentine's Day of my Freshman year of college to my dorm with a note thanking me for going to a movie with him a few days before (just as friends of course- ha) and telling me that "Every girl deserves flowers on Valentine's Day."  This is where you can melt.  I do ever time I tell it.

We continued to hang out a lot, go on dates that weren't dates.  Attend the same church, go on mission trips together.  Get teased that we "might as well just date". Ignored the teasing.  Little did I know, though, Justin's feelings were growing and growing and growing.  And he was pursuing me even when I wasn't catching on.  Amidst me dating a goofball for a couple months in college, amidst me ignoring it, amidst me thinking we would always be just "be friends".

Justin- left from right side; Me- right side
I kept "searching"...hoping God would put someone in my life.  I started a journal to my future husband (my way of trying to help myself be more content with not finding "that guy").  And there was a moment where Justin and I were verbalizing to a mutual friend of where we felt called in life.  We both felt called to stay around home.  We both felt called to have "a quiet little life".  We both felt called to have a family.  To raise that family around their family.  It started hitting me that we were both feeling called to the same, sweet little life.  A very similar love story.  On my ride home that day, driving, I remember hearing God whisper to me (through a gentle peace in my heart) that Justin was the guy I was going to marry.  That I needed to hand over the fight.  I was searching and seeking, and my future husband was right by me as my best friend.

Through event after event, I realized something maybe was changing.  I was getting jealous over girls he told me he liked back at school.  I wanted (and expected) him to hang out with me.  A lot.  I wanted him around all the time.  I just continued to push it to the back of my mind.

One winter night close to Christmas, Justin and I drove around to look at Christmas lights.  I thought it was just another time to hang-out.  But it was just us.  And little did I know, Justin had been praying hard and seeking a lot of guidance and counsel over that moment to come.  As we drove, he let me know how much he cared about me.  And that it wasn't just as friends.  It was the real deal.  He was crazy about me and always had been.  The HUGE elephant in the room was there.  I couldn't ignore it anymore.  Looking back, it was like one of those moments in a movie where you get so mad at the dumb girl because of how she freaks out and totally crushes the guy's heart.  But if she would have just been brave and been honest, it would have ended in a sweet, sweet moment.  Well I was the dumb girl.  I was the girl (the stubborn girl) that freaked and told him that I just liked him as a friend.  Nothing else.  He let me know that he had to draw a line and we couldn't hang out for a while.  That he had to sort things out and his heart couldn't handle us just hanging out as friends.  Maybe eventually but not then.  My heart broke, but I remained stubborn.

He went away to visit his best friend that moved away for college.  I hated that time. I hated that we weren't speaking.  We weren't seeing each other.  It was just so odd. Seemed so against what I really wanted.  My college roommates, other close friends, and family would tell you about times where they dogged me like crazy that I had shut him down.  That I had been so goofy.  That I was only kidding myself.  I started to pray that God would change my heart if this was His will.  That I wanted His plan, not mine. That I didn't want my pride and goofiness to get in the way of His best in my life.

Justin came back and we slowly started being around each other more.  We even took a trip together with Chad and Cheri (still our best friends).  They were dating.  We weren't. Ha!

Fast forward to March of that year (my junior year of college) where he took me out for my birthday (and promised it wasn't a date).  We went to dinner and walked around downtown by the river.  I remember thinking, "I could do this."

By April we were dating, knowing it would be a quick road to engagement or a quick road to a break-up.  After all the build-up (over the course of YEARS), I don't even remember the moment we transitioned over to actually "dating".  We even sought some counsel from our mentor at church that also did our pre-marital counseling with us.  He had been with us through the entire road through the HS and college years of our love story.  I panicked/freaked out once (or twice) during that time, and Justin was quick to remind me that it was okay it was "weird" and that we didn't need to worry about all the pressure around us (you have no idea how happy people were we were together :). We dated about a month and a half and were already talking engagement.  Talking rings.  Ring shopping.  The months passed (almost).

And then July 19th, 2007 (the summer before my senior year of college) happened.

My mom and dad shared with me one day that Justin was going to go on our vacation together (a road trip up through all the northeastern states, including Boston and NYC.)  This was the day before we left.  (Justin had had "the talk" with my Dad the day before that.)  I thought this was so odd (yet exciting) because our family vacays were sacred and my brother and I never took other people with us.  (But, of course, I was dating the one guy they had always hoped I would eventually marry. ;)

That night, Justin called me while he was at church "getting some things organized and together before we left the next day" (he was helping with the middle school youth at that time) and said that one of our female youth members was at church and had some issues she needed to talk over with me about something going on in her life.  (Hook.  Line.  And sinker.)

I got there and no one else was there.  I walked toward the sanctuary and it hit me.  (I never thought there was any way he would actually succeed at surprising me with the engagement.)

He had candles lit all the way up to the alter, pictures from all our memories together from Kindergarten on throughout the church, and Keith Urban's "Making Memories of Us" playing in the sanctuary, which had been "our song" we coined. We walked up through the sanctuary where a camera was to capture this moment (because of my love for pictures).  That sweet boy I met in kindergarten got on one knee and proposed that night.  And this stubborn girl was finally the girl to cheer on in the love story.  I jumped up and down.  I hugged and kissed him.  I said yes.

And never looked back.

four years!

Today is hubby and mine's 4th Wedding Anniversary! I am beyond blessed to be married to my best friend....the man that chased after me like crazy when we were in college...and continues to chase after me.

We've been through some amazing times within our four years of marriage.  Here are a few highlights!

Year 1- Getting married!, honeymoon, bought a house, my first teaching job, adopted Boone (our Beagle/Lab mix)

Year 2-trip to Texas, trip to DC, Mississippi mission trip with church

Year 3-Trip to Disney World, Justin graduated with his bachelors, found out we were expecting Adeline, a couple beach trips, Alabama mission trip with church

Year 4-sold our cars and bought new ones, Adeline was born in November! (TONS of firsts), turning into "Mommy and Daddy", my transition from full-time teacher to part-time art teacher/part-time stay at home Mommy, family trip (just us 3) to the Smoky Mountains, family beach trips

I'm sure I'm leaving some things out.  And these are the big things in our life.  The in-betweens and all the small moments are where I find myself feeling the most blessed to be married to such a wonderful man.

Nights sitting on the couch together.

Laughing, being goofy, and making fun of each other.

Hitting a drive-through and eating dinner in the car, sitting by the lake.

Walks.

Watching his reaction when he walks through the door and sees Adeline after a long day of work.  Seeing her huge smile directed right back at him as she reaches for him.

Long talks about goals and dreams for our family.

Paper, rock, scissors over small household chores.

I could go on and on.

I love you babe.  Happy Anniversary! Here's to many, many, many more!

i love you because...

I have been working on getting our master bedroom into a bit more of a retreat (as much as you can with a bassinet and baby monitor in it ;) and less of a "throw things down and walk away" room.  Besides removing clutter, I've also been looking for ways to add a bit more romance into things.

I have always loved the idea of leaving notes for each other as husband and wife.  I just think it's so important in a relationship to let each other know why you appreciate and love each other.  If you don't say it or show it in some way...how does the other person know? We have a "Praise Board" in our dining area that we love to leave notes on so when I saw a couple ideas on Pinterest, I knew a place to leave love notes was exactly what we needed in our bedroom to add some fun and romance to things!

The inspiration was of course found on Pinterest.

Here was what I came up with for our bedroom wall using a frame we had on hand, a fun font I downloaded, and a simple word document...

Now it's hanging on our wall under one of my favorite pictures from our honeymoon.

I'm looking forward to Justin being surprised and finding his first note (I did this when he was at work).  Hopefully this adds a little more romance and gratitude into our busy days!

a merry miscellany monday

Linking up with Carissa today for Miscellany Monday! My mind pretty much only thinks miscellany these days.  Now I know exactly what people were talking about when they said that "pregnancy brain" only leads to a much more extreme version of  "baby brain".  Living it and wouldn't change a thing!

One...

My daughter is much more of a fashionista than me.  Her newborn accessories include white, furry boots that she definitely rocks.

Two...
Speaking of fashion.  Is it funny that I feel like a runway model just by wearing non-maternity clothes? Okay definitely not a runway model...but I feel like a million dollars when I'm able to put on a shirt that would have come up to my chest a couple months ago.  Now pants are a different story.  I'm still rockin' the maternity jeans some, because let's be honest, I refuse to go out and spend money on new jeans.  I am determined to get back to my pre-pregnancy pants if it's the last thing I do.  Breastfeeding does help tremendously...but those last 5 pounds decide to stick around.  Maybe it's God's way of reminding me of accomplishing pregnancy and bringing a sweet new baby into the world.  Let's just say that even though I've lost most of it...things definitely end up being flabbier and shifted a bit.  Hello, Mommy body. ;)

Three...

On a serious note, we lost my dear childhood pup a few days ago.  My sweet yellow lab, Nick, was my buddy since 4th grade.  He was 15 years old and it was just time.  He will remain in our hearts.  Doesn't he have the sweetest face?

 Four...

As if I wasn't an over-achiever already, Pinterest has made me more of one.  I feel like I have to complete every neat craft I find, cook every new meal or baked-good I pin, and organize our memories just like all the ideas in my "memory keeping" folder.  Thank you, Pinterest, for giving me more anxiety on being an "I-have-to-do-everything" kind of girl.  Yikes...can we say "prioritize"?!

Five...

I'm married to a kid-at-heart and I love him for that.  Two nights ago my hubby brought his trains from his parents' house and decided to set them up around our tree.  So fun! Then last night I found him "playing" under the tree with his trains.  Gah.  Yet another reason he makes such a wonderful daddy!

Six...

Live Action! We are obsessed with "Call of the Wildman" on Animal Planet (Sundays at 10pm).  Anyone else out there? Well I will admit we only started watching because he lives in Kentucky...but this man is crazy and got us hooked! "Turtle Man" goes into nasty ponds and grabs snapping turtles out with his bare hands.  Actually he'll grab any wild animal by hand.  As great as we think he is...let me clear a few things up.  Not everyone in Kentucky is without teeth.  We do wear shoes.  We do not take baths in huge Rubbermaid tubs.  And we do know what cell phones and the internet are.  Just wanted to set that straight in case you decide to watch. ;)

Seven...

We have gone through our first "batch" of cloth diapers! Adeline decided to only use them for her wet diapers....she didn't poo in one of them.  So really, I feel like we haven't completely ventured into the cloth diaper world because I haven't had to deal with a messy one.  Oh well...the first load of cloth diapers should be easy to wash! How considerate is my little one month old?

Eight...

My pastor preached a great sermon yesterday on JOY.  He gave us this great acronym to remember on keeping our focus on what is most important first and second, while we should keep ourselves last.  J-Jesus, O-Others, Y-Yourself.

Nine...

Justin and I are working to get back into the swing of date nights.  Adeline just successfully took a bottle from her daddy a couple nights ago.  She's been a little finicky with the bottle and she definitely is all about Momma still.  I'm not complaining...selfishly, I love that she is so content with nursing, but I do want her to be able to take a bottle to allow us to have some time together and her to have time with those adoring grandparents that can't wait to have her to themselves.  And I know Justin adores the time with her when she takes a bottle from him.  Now Justin and I just have to buckle down and release the grip a tad bit to leave her.  I cringe...but I do know it's what's best for us and for her.  I'm convinced it's crucial for a sweet little one to have a mommy and daddy that love each other and make each other a priority.

one of our last date nights before our sweet girl arrived
Ten...

Our Christmas festivities begin mid-week and will continue through the weekend.  I adore Christmas.  The time with family, the time reflecting on Christ, the traditions, the joy, and the memories created and the memories cherished.  It is even more special this year as we start our own traditions as a family of three.  Having a baby heightens the joy of every day...so this time of year is just icing on the cake.  I'm sure blogging will take a back seat yet again this week.  So Merry Christmas to you and your family! Have a joy-filled time celebrating the birth of our Savior.  He is the reason for the season and the best gift of all.
